What to expect when starting therapy
We know that seeking therapy can feel like a very daunting process. We are here to make it as easy as possible for you. We often have fears, preconceptions, or even no idea at all about what therapy will be like the first time we try it. How could you? Unless you have been to therapy before or someone you know has, you will likely only have ideas based on tv, blogs, or word of mouth.
Each therapist has their own process for the first session however there are some things that will be constant in your first session. Your therapist will be on time, greet you, and tell you a little about themselves/how they approach therapy. They will also make you aware of confidentiality, their fee, our cancellation policy, and how to best contact them between sessions.
Then, they will ask you what brings you to therapy, and what made you decide to start now. They might also have you complete some assessments to better gauge how you are feeling. The first few sessions might feel more like an interview than a conversation but that is normal. It is important for our therapists to get as much information from you about what is contributing to your distress and to paint the most detailed picture. Your therapist will also go over the plan of action. This plan might include short- and long-term goals, other referrals, a conversation about frequency and/or length of sessions. All of this is collaborative, so don’t think you can’t voice your opinion or needs.
At Key Therapy & Wellness we want you to feel supported, challenged, and seen. We know that therapy is nerve-wracking and asking for help probably for the first time is terrifying. We are here to ease that stress. Your therapist will do everything they can to live up to those values. If for whatever reason your therapist doesn’t feel like a good fit, reach out to our admin and we will help you find another therapist. That could mean referring you to another practice or clinician outside of our practice.
We are so glad you’re here and we’re ready to start this journey with you.
